The New York Red Bulls beat Inter Miami 2-0 on Saturday in Harrison, New Jersey, a result that kept them above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.

New York began the day clinging to the ninth and final postseason spot in the East. The win moved the Red Bulls to 11-14-6 on the season.

The opening goal arrived in the 7th minute, when Inter Miami midfielder Carlos Casimiro put the ball into his own net. That early break gave the home side the lead, and it held for most of the match.

The Red Bulls did not double their advantage until the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Emil Forsberg, who had come on as a substitute in the 85th minute, scored his fourth goal of the season to seal the result.

Cameron Harper and Ronald Donkor supplied the assists. It was the second of the season for Harper, while Donkor reached a career-high 10th.

In goal, Ethan Horvath made two saves for New York. It was his fifth clean sheet through his first 31 league starts.

Lionel Messi did not enter the game until the 56th minute, when he replaced Riquelme Fillipi. Going into the match, Messi had 25 goals this season, five more than any other player. His 15 assists left him tied with Los Angeles FC's Son Heung-min for the league lead.

Dayne St. Clair stopped five shots for Inter Miami, which fell to 15-6-10. The loss stood out against recent history. Miami had gone 3-0-1 in its previous four meetings with the Red Bulls, outscoring them 17-6 in those games. The club had also won its three earlier matches this month by a combined score of 9-1.

Both teams play again on Wednesday. Inter Miami hosts FC Cincinnati, while the Red Bulls travel to face the New England Revolution.
